Unique. It's a word we use quite often, ironically. But The Scorpio Races is unlike any book I've ever read and to call it, different, somehow doesn't seem enough. I'd read The Raven Boys by Maggie and thought it a bit too dark for my tastes, but in chatting with one of our many well-read patrons, she suggested I give The Scorpio Races a try. It IS dark - that seems to be Maggie's comfort zone. But darkness goes hand in hand with the...

Consistency, thy name is Kiera. My daughter and I loved Kiera's Selection trilogy and were looking forward to anything more that she might add to the series. It's one thing to keep the good times rolling through three consecutive books that fall in the same time line/setting etc. But to jump ahead 20 years and keep that same vibe, the same excitement when the times have changed? Not easy. In the first three books, America and Maxon are literally battling to survive the day when rebels are never far from storming into the castle and causing chaos. Without that tension, I wondered if Kiera could create an intense novel from peaceful times, the answer is a...

This is a humdinger of a book and I loved every page it offered! First, praise is due to the cover of this book which first drew my attention. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Steampunk is quickly becoming a dominant genre in both Young Adult and Adult fiction novels. Huzzah! I don't often give out...

Oh.  My.  Goodness.  I was beyond thrilled when I saw that Sarah Prineas was writing a fourth book in this super series.  She had written the first three and then veered off for another four book series which, honestly, didn't grip me like The Magic Thief did.  Then, when I saw she was going back to her original series I pre-purchased, Home, right away.  And I'm so glad I did!  Since I'm chatting about her hiatus from Conn and his adventures, let me say Bravo to Sarah as a writer for making this fourth book a seamless continuation for us as readers.

I loved this book when I bought it in 2010 and I've loved rereading it three times since then. Janet is a powerhouse writer and her Stephanie Plum series is great, her co-writing projects so/so good, her Alex Barnaby series is also quite good, but her Lizzy and Diesel series holds the most praise from me by far. Taken separately, the elements...

Wowza am I loving this series! Don't Hex with Texas is my favourite so far due in large part to the setting of Cobb, Texas. Being a small town girl myself this was all quite familiar and it was a nice change of scenery from big, bustling New York. It has been such a delight to walk the path of Katie and Owen's relationship. Even at the end of book four, it is...

I believe readers have the best year because when you love to read it's like Christmas whenever a much anticipated book arrives in your hands. For me, I've got a few 'Christmases' to look forward to this year and May 1 when The One arrived was Christmas for me. I was so happy I didn't even spare a moment to actually perform my happy dance - I dashed off to pick my daughter up from an after-school practice and as soon as my feet hit home, I ran upstairs to my reading chair and submersed myself for four straight hours. Thank heavens for husbands who cook dinner! Kiera does a smash...

If books were candy this one is a sweet treat. Intense, fun, sneaky and delightful all in one scoop, Renegade Magic is a charming and loveable novel. I happily admit that I stayed up late to finish this story - not often I can say that about a Junior Fiction book. Most adults turn their noses up at Junior Fiction in general but there are pockets of genius storytelling and Stephanie Burgis is an author that has proved golden for me in both books of her series, The Unladylike Adventures of Kat Stephenson. I love that our main gal, Kat, is fiercely...

Like Alice in Wonderland, to tumble into the pages of Soulless is to find yourself in a warped version of the world you know and be fascinated by the characters you find there. I simply loved this book that reads like a thick stew - fantasy, sci-fi, historical, romance, suspense, adventure and the still warm freshly baked tea biscuit to go with this stew is the comedy. The best thing about comedy is the way it surprises you - especially in a historical, puritanical setting such as Soulless in the mid-1800's, Great Britain. I...

In the words of the chicken from Robin Hood, Ooh Da La Lee! What a great book! Okay, she didn't say the book part but the sentiment is the same. My 12 year old daughter read this book first and told me it was really good and did we have the other books because she wanted them right away. A few months and an approved budget at the library later I finally had the trilogy in hand and decided to give it a go myself. And I'm so glad I did! While most adults turn...
