Synopsis:

BOOK ONE: PENDRAGON SERIES. Bobby Pendragon is a seemingly normal fourteen-year-old boy. He has a family, a home, and even Marley, his beloved dog. But there is something very special about Bobby. He is going to save the world. And not just Earth as we know it. Bobby is slowly starting to realize that life in the cosmos isn't quite what he thought it was. And before he can object, he is swept off to an alternate dimension known as Denduron, a territory inhabited by strange beings, ruled by a magical tyrant, and plagued by dangerous revolution. If Bobby wants to see his family again, he's going to have to accept his role as savior, and accept it wholeheartedly. Because, as he is about to discover, Denduron is only the beginning...

Well dang if I'm not hitting big, fat zero's on trying to find a series for my 14 year old son to read.  He and I both gave up on this book very shortly in.  For me, it was a sense the entire series was going to be based on overcoming hardship after hardship after hardship after....you get my idea.  I'm not a big fan of books like The Lord of the Rings because I feel so darn tired thinking of all those hills to climb, battles to fight, enemies to avoid.  It makes me feel exhausted when I read books like these and right off the bat, our main guy Bobby is in a bad way, then a worse way, then a WAY worser way!

As a reader, if my experience is going to be fraught with hardship, you better darn well give me a goofy character to make me laugh and offset the grit of everything else going on.  There is no such levity or balance to be found within the first six chapters which is where I gave up.

For my son, he didn't last six chapters and I am chagrined to say he didn't make it past the first one.  He's a grab me right away or not at all sort of reader.  Ah well, never fear, we'll keep plugging away at those library shelves until we find him something that captures his interest, and hopefully mine as well!
